Why Halse Candles? The story behind the name

Every business name has a story — and for me, Halse is more than just a word. It’s a place that holds some of my happiest memories.
For many years, my husband and I spent our summer holidays camping on Exmoor with our children. We always stayed at the same little campsite on a working farm — tucked away in the middle of nowhere. Surrounded by sweeping moorland, Exmoor ponies, red deer, buzzards soaring overhead, and sheep and cattle grazing on the moor, it was the perfect escape from everyday life.

The views were breathtaking — rolling hills, winding rivers, tiny streams glistening in the sunlight, and vast open skies that seemed to go on forever. It was peaceful, tranquil, and the kind of place where you could truly unwind.
We’d spend our days exploring with a map and compass (not always successfully — we got lost more than once!) but somehow always found our way back. Evenings were just as special — sitting together for dinner, playing board games, reading, and simply soaking in the calm.

At night, the magic of Halse Farm truly came alive. Being part of one of the UK’s Dark Sky Reserves, the sky would come alive with millions of stars. With no light pollution, it felt like the universe was putting on a show just for us — a canopy of twinkling light stretching endlessly above.
That’s where the name Halse comes from — my happy place. A place that represents calm, connection, and nature’s quiet beauty.
The night skies there continue to inspire my candle collections today. Many of my scented candle names are drawn from the constellations and stars you can see above Exmoor — because when you light a Halse Candle, I want it to feel like a little piece of that magic: a soft, glowing light that soothes the soul and brings a moment of peace.

Planning a Visit To Exmoor
If you love escaping to nature, starry skies, and getting away from it all, I can’t recommend Halse Farm enough. It’s peaceful, remote, and filled with the kind of quiet magic that stays with you long after you’ve left.
One of the many reasons I fell in love with Exmoor is how much there is to explore nearby. Each place has its own magic and makes you feel as though you’ve stepped back in time.
For a trip to the coast, visit Porlock Weir — an ancient seaside port and picturesque coastal village where quaint cottages line the shore and the sea meets the moorland. It’s peaceful, full of charm, and perfect for a gentle wander or an afternoon by the water.
If walking is more your pace, head to Tarr Steps, a beautiful ancient clapper bridge crossing the River Barle. The surrounding woodland paths are ideal for a day of exploring, with the sound of the river flowing gently beside you.
And after a long day outdoors, there’s nothing better than a hearty meal at The Royal Oak in Winsford — a traditional country pub serving delicious food and a warm welcome. It’s the perfect spot to end the day before heading back to relax under the stars.
Under the Dark Sky
As one of the UK’s official Dark Sky Reserves, the stars there are unlike anything I’ve ever seen. With no light pollution, the sky would burst into life — millions of stars glittering against the deep black of night.
